Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics Indiana! If you are looking to make a real difference in your life and the lives of others, look no further. Special Olympics Indiana needs you!

Whether you give your time year-round, seasonally or for a single-day event, volunteering is an experience you will remember forever. All volunteers receive a T-shirt when they check in at the event. We ask that volunteers wear this T-shirt during their shifts so they can be easily identified by our athletes and coaches.

Become a Class A volunteer or check your account

Class A volunteers

Our volunteer management system has transitioned to the Center of Excellence (COE) volunteer management system. All volunteers must register in COE before signing up to help at an event.

Class A volunteers (such as coaches, Unified partners and others with direct access to athletes) must complete additional requirements, including a background check, safety courses and codes of conduct.

Class B volunteers (single-day event volunteers) can create a login and register for an event directly.

  • Plane Pull Challenge

    Indianapolis International Airport Postal Hub 2475 South Hoffman Road, Indianapolis, IN, United States
    Each year, teams of up to 15 people take on an 82-ton Boeing 757 jetliner in a massive game of tug-of-war in our largest single-day fundraiser. During the Plane Pull® Challenge, teams compete to pull an aircraft across a 12-foot track. The fastest teams in each division will earn a trophy and ultimate bragging rights!     Giddy up and join us for a spectacular show as we celebrate the grace, determination, and sheer horsepower of our Special Olympics equestrian athletes! Volunteer Spotlight

Becky

Barker

Becky has served as a volunteer for 10 years. She brings a combination of positive energy, empathy, great ideas and intuition to engage in meaningful ways with athletes. Becky has been a Unified partner and mentor for athlete leadership, serving as an inspiration to others and an example that other volunteers follow. She also has been an ALU classroom assistant and is co-facilitator for Washington Township ALC and ALU. Her help at Summer Games as both a Unified partner and volunteer is credited with helping enhance the experience for all athletes.

Levels & Requirements

To be a volunteer with Special Olympics Indiana, there are certification requirements. View specifications below.

Class A

Class A

Any volunteer who has regular contact with athletes.
Examples Include:

  • Coaches
  • Chaperones
  • Unified Sports® Partners
  • Volunteer Leadership / Management Position

Class A volunteers are required to complete a five-step application and training process.

Class B

Class B

Any volunteer who has single-day event responsibilities. Examples include:

  • Referee
  • Scorekeeper/Timer
  • Announcer
  • Awards presenter
