Program combines fitness, nutrition and mental health

Train 4 Life

Train 4 Life is a free, community-based health and fitness program for people with intellectual disabilities that empowers athletes to build lifelong healthy habits through physical activity, nutrition education and mental wellness support.

Designed for Special Olympics athletes ages 13 and older, this inclusive 12-week program partners with local gyms and fitness professionals across Indiana. Athletes participate in small-group workouts alongside peers with and without intellectual disabilities, fostering mentorship, friendship and a strong sense of community. Each session is intentionally designed to meet athletes where they are, offering adaptable exercises and progressive challenges that support individual growth.

Train 4 Life goes beyond workouts. Athletes complete pre- and post-program health and fitness assessments, allowing them to see measurable improvements in areas such as strength, endurance, blood pressure and overall wellness. Weekly education components focus on nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits and goal setting, helping athletes carry what they learn into everyday life.

Research shows that people with intellectual disabilities face significantly higher rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and low bone density. Train 4 Life directly addresses these health disparities by providing consistent support, accountability and access to inclusive fitness environments.

Train 4 Life serves as a long-term health pathway that empowers athletes to gain confidence, improve their health and continue healthy behaviors well beyond the program.
