Indiana Athlete, Volunteer Named to Special Olympics USA Team

Special Olympics USA is proud to announce that it will send a 201-member delegation — including two from Indiana — to the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, happening June 17-25.

Special Olympics USA is comprised of 133 athletes and Unified partners, 38 coaches and 23 delegation members who support team operations. Athletes will compete in 14 of the 26 sports offered: athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, golf, gymnastics — artistic, gymnastics — rhythmic, kayaking, powerlifting, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

The delegation also includes Special Olympics Unified Sports® teams, where people with and without intellectual disabilities compete together as teammates. Special Olympics USA will have representation in the following Unified Sports®: basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, sailing, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

Athlete Liam Price of Greenwood and volunteer George Srour of Indianapolis will represent Indiana as part of the Special Olympics USA Team. Additionally, as part of the officiating crew for the World Games 2023, Ken Hart of Indianapolis has been named as an alternate official for cycling.

Liam has trained and competed with Special Olympics for the past 11 years in basketball, flag football, swimming and Special Olympics DanceSport in ballroom dance. Liam will represent Special Olympics USA in swimming. An active participant in Special Olympics Unified Sports®, Liam served as a former Special Olympics U.S. Youth Ambassador promoting inclusion through advocacy.

Liam honed his skills as a swimmer through Special Olympics and competed in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Fla. Now a junior studying communication at the University of Indianapolis, he is the first Special Olympics athlete to compete on the school’s swim and dive team. In 2021, Liam was honored as a guest speaker at the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis, sharing the importance of inclusion at all sports levels.

As a volunteer at White River Township Fire Department, Liam works with the search and rescue canine, Rosie, on training techniques to locate missing individuals.

Liam celebrates his hard work and the accomplishment of his selection for the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, serving as a role model for the power of inclusion on a global scale.

George first got involved with Special Olympics as a Unified partner in 1997 and has been fortunate to serve in a variety of roles ever since. George will represent Special Olympics USA as assistant head of delegation. This will be George’s seventh Special Olympics World Games, focused on the intricate transportation logistics of Special Olympics USA delegation members. Through Special Olympics, George met his wife in 2011. Being part of this organization, for George, means celebrating collective successes, watching people come together to make it all happen.

George is employed as chief dreamer at Building Tomorrow, a nonprofit organization equipping communities to support universal access to inclusive, quality education. He serves as a board member for two organizations working in East Africa, Kidogo and Lwala Community Alliance. In his spare time, he is working toward the goal of running 10,000 miles in his 30s. Attending the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, he is most looking forward to the introduction of Special Olympics USA to the Opening Ceremony.

Ken has been a volunteer with Special Olympics Indiana for nearly 25 years. He and his wife, Cindi, have supported the cycling competition at Summer Games since it began nearly 20 years ago.
