Freezin’ For a Reason: Annual Polar Plunge Raises Vital Funds for Special Olympics Athletes throughout Indiana
Thousands are set to participate in Special Olympics Indiana’s signature cold-weather fundraiser this winter, raising money and awareness for the organization’s year-round programs and events.
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 17, 2022) — An annual tradition for more than 20 years, Special Olympics Indiana again invites supporters to make a splash for athletes across the state this winter by taking part in the 2022 Polar Plunge — a series of exhilarating events where individuals and teams brave the elements by taking an icy dip to demonstrate their commitment to the cause.
As the organization’s signature fundraiser, the Polar Plunge directly benefits more than 18,000 Special Olympics athletes throughout Indiana and plays a vital role in ensuring that an ever-growing number of children and adults with intellectual disabilities continue to benefit from no-cost participation in life-changing sports, health, education, and leadership programs.
A total of 17 Polar Plunge events will be held in January, February, and March this year, with sites in Boonville, Borden, Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Greenwood, Indianapolis (Butler University and Eagle Creek Park), Muncie, North Manchester, Petersburg, South Bend, Terre Haute, Valparaiso, Versailles, and West Lafayette. For details and a complete calendar of events, visit PolarPlungeIN.org.
“Our athletes never pay to participate in Special Olympics, and the money raised through the Polar Plunge is a big reason why that’s possible,” said President & CEO Jeff Mohler. “It’s incredible to see thousands of people supporting our cause by jumping into freezing water every year. And each and every one of them is a champion for inclusion in their community and for people with intellectual disabilities across the state.”
More than 3,000 individuals take the plunge in a typical year, each raising a minimum of $85 and often significantly more. All plungers who raise the minimum earn an official Polar Plunge long-sleeved t-shirt, with additional prizes including souvenir blankets, beach towels, and more awarded to those who reach higher fundraising thresholds.
Updated health and safety protocols designed to limit the spread of COVID-19 will be implemented at all Polar Plunge events this year, and those who wish to be a part of the fun without attending an in-person event are encouraged to register as “virtual plungers” or to instead sign up for the second annual Polar Plunge Run — a virtual 5K/10K fundraiser that coincides with the 2022 Polar Plunge season.
The Polar Plunge is presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run® to benefit Special Olympics Indiana and is supported by a variety of companies and other organizations through sponsorships or employee matching programs. To date, the Polar Plunge has generated nearly $10 million in support of Special Olympics Indiana’s year-round programs and events.
