Longtime Volunteer Becky Walls Named Kosciusko County Woman of the Year

Former Kosciusko County Coordinator Becky Walls received the 2024 Woman of the Year award Thursday night at the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s 113th Annual Awards Dinner.
“(Becky) is a truly exceptional individual whose dedication, compassion and leadership have transformed countless lives in Kosciusko County,” presenter David Slone said in a Warsaw Times-Union article. “To understand the depth of her impact, one must look at the history of the Kosciusko County Special Olympics and the extraordinary role this woman has played in shaping the lives of athletes and families in our community.”
Walls’ mother founded the Kosciusko County Special Olympics in 1973 to provide opportunities for children with developmental disabilities. Becky Walls’ involvement began in 1988 as a Unified bowling partner while also helping with events and fundraisers.
In 1999, Walls assumed leadership of the Kosciusko County program, which now serves more than 200 athletes in seven sports.
“I am pleased to strongly recommend Becky Walls for recognition in honor of her extraordinary contributions to Kosciusko County, particularly through her more than 40-plus years of service with Special Olympics Indiana,” Special Olympics Indiana CEO and President Jeff Mohler wrote in his nomination letter.
Mohler said Walls has been instrumental in “creating opportunities for local athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities that would not otherwise exist. Through her tireless work, she has fostered an inclusive, supportive environment where athletes can compete, grow and form lasting relationships. Her efforts have directly enhanced the quality of life for athletes and their families, breaking down barriers and promoting a stronger sense of community.”
Walls has received several Area 5 awards for her roles as a coach, volunteer and Unified partner.
“I appreciate this,” Walls told the Times-Union. “I don’t do it for the award. I love my athletes.”
