Volunteer with us

Special Olympics Indiana divides the state into County and Area programs. County Programs are led by volunteer committees that ensure year-round sports training and competition for eligible athletes. While each committee typically serves one county, there are some that oversee multiple rural counties or portions of urban counties. The appointed County Coordinator oversees the program's operations. Connect with your local coordinator to learn more!

Derrick has been involved in nearly every sport that Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County offers: track and field, softball, cornhole, bowling and basketball. So far, he has helped coach basketball and softball in Jackson County. Derrick has been a member of the county’s Athlete Leadership Council since it started in 2021 and took on the vice chair role in 2022. He also joined the Area 2 ALC when that formed in 2023. Spotlight

Jim

Shepherd

Since the Special Olympics program restarted in Jackson County in late 2017, Jim has coached softball, basketball, horseshoes, track and field, cornhole, bowling and bocce. Along with being a coach, Jim has served as an ALU mentor to athlete Derrick Martin. Jim also regularly attends fundraisers, game nights, movie nights and other social activities and helps transport athletes to practices and competitions. Plus, he enrolled in the Pacers Pals program a few years ago, giving our athletes and his clients an opportunity to go Indiana Pacers basketball games. Because of his dedication to the Jackson County program, Jim has been awarded Coach of the Year each year. Through his job working with people with special needs, he also has been very instrumental in getting more athletes involved in our program.
