LaGRANGE, Ind. — Tuesday night’s basketball games between Lakeland High School and Westview Jr.-Sr. High School hold more than a cross-county rivalry.
In a special ceremony to be held during the intermission between the girls and boys varsity basketball games hosted by Lakeland (at approximately 7:30 p.m.), each school will be presented a “Unified Champion School” banner in recognition of their exemplary efforts in support of the statewide Champions Together Unified Sports® program. Representatives from Special Olympics Indiana and the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) will be on hand to make the presentation.
“This is really an extraordinary milestone for us—this is the first time we have had two rival schools work together to both achieve this honor,” said Lee Lonzo, director of Champions Together. “Perhaps most significant is the fact that the cooperative efforts of these high school students has led to the formation of a new Special Olympics LaGrange County program that will offer opportunities for local residents where none previously existed.”
