FOLLOWING DAY THREE OF NATIONAL COMPETITION, SPECIAL OLYMPICS TEAM INDIANA MEDAL COUNT AT 28, RIBBONS, 10
 
LINCOLN – Following day three of competition yesterday, Team Indiana’s medal count reached 28, along with 10 ribbons in the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games held this week at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
 
On Tuesday, Team Indiana’s bocce team comprised of Jim Benadum, 39 of Muncie, Drew Metzger, 30, of Valparaiso, Tammy Kmiec, 44, of Crown Point and Jane Padgett, 53, from Sheridan took silver in four-person traditional competition.  As a part of this type of play, each athlete tosses one ball. On Wednesday, Padgett and Kmiec took gold in doubles competition, while Metzger and Benadum earned silver in doubles.
 
In addition, in bowling, on Tuesday, Iris Lewellen, 48, of Muncie earned silver in women’s singles competition, and Stacey Gaines, 44, also of Muncie, placed fifth in singles. On Wednesday, the two placed fourth in women’s doubles.
 
Also on Wednesday, Jerry Moore, 21, of Cicero and Joey Evans, 20, placed sixth in bowling men’s doubles.
 
Patrick Knollman, 20, of Carmel won four golds in powerlifting, lifting 203 pounds in the squat event, 143 pounds in the bench press and 242 pounds in the dead lift competition. He also received a gold medal for his overall performance, which totals the weight of his three best lifts.
 
On Wednesday, Erin Gunnick, 25, of Griffith took gold in the 200-meter dash. She also finished fourth place in shot put and also took fourth in the 400-meter run. Backer also took gold in the javelin throw and finished fifth in the 200-meter dash.
 
Hugh Breen, 22, of Zionsville, and Jennifer Seeburger, 36, from Valparaiso both earned silver medals in the javelin throw. The two also both competed in the 400-meter walk, where Breen earned gold and Seeburger took fifth place.
 
David Alvarado, 20, of Fortville, and John Kelly, 51 of Gary, both earned silver medals in the 400-meter run. In addition, Katlin Slough, 19, of Princeton, placed fourth in the 400-meter run. Kelly also took silver in the 200-meter dash. Alvarado took fifth in the same event.
 
On Wednesday, in aquatics, four Team Indiana athletes participated in the 25-yard backstroke. Grace Vittorio, 14, of Noblesville earned a gold medal, Lori Tryon, 27, of Indianapolis also took gold, Kendra Fluty, 17, of Evansville earned a bronze medal, and Sam Fawley, 22, of Logansport also took bronze. Vittorio also took gold in the 100-yard freestyle, and Victoria Roberts, 15, of Kokomo, earned a bronze medal in the same event.
 
Mitch Johnson, 23, of Muncieand Jordan Sisco, 20, of Jeffersonville bothtook gold in the 50-yard freestyle. Kristopher Kroeger, 17, of Newburgh, finished fourth in the event. Kroeger, combined with Roberts, Tryon, and Ryan Brogan, 21, of Indianapolis, also took gold in the 4 x 50-yard medley relay.
 
Also on Wednesday, Team Indiana golf athlete Jason Evans, 40, of Jeffersonville and his non-disabled Unified Partner, Michael Burk, 26, of Elizabeth, earned a bronze medal in 18-holes of alternating stroke play. In addition, Andrea Boling, 33, of Boonville, also took bronze in nine holes of individual play. Bobby Hilbert, 52 of Jeffersonville, finished fourth in individuals.
 
The 2010 USA National Games, held July 18-23 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, is the largest sporting event held in the history of Nebraska featuring competition in 13 different sports by 3,000 athletes from 50 states. The Games are also expected to include 1,000 coaches and official delegates, 15,000 family members and friends, 8,000 volunteers and 30,000 spectators.

Special Olympics USA National Games events are held every four years, with the inaugural event held in 2006 at the Iowa State University in Ames. Representatives of Team Indiana are selected based upon performance in state and regional competition.

CASSIDY TURLEY PRESENTS ‘BOWLING FOR BOWLERS’ FUNDRAISING EVENT TO BENEFIT SPECIAL OLYMPICS INDIANA ATHLETES
 
Bowling event to raise funds for athletes participating in National Games
 
INDIANAPOLIS – Cassidy Turley, one of the nation’s largest commercial real estate firms, is hosting a bowling fundraising event to benefit Special Olympics Indiana athletes competing in the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 at Woodland Bowl, located 3421 E. 96th Street in Indianapolis, 46240.
 
The entry fee for the event is $15 per person, which includes one bowling game and shoes and a raffle ticket for prizes. Each additional donation of $5 will earn participants an additional raffle ticket. Furthermore, a prize will be given away for the “Best Dressed Bowler.” Food and beverages will also be provided.
 
Special Olympics Indiana will send a delegation of 114 of Special Olympics athletes, Unified Partners, coaches and support staff will represent the Hoosier State in the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games, July 18-23 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. 
 
Funds from the event will benefit four Special Olympics Indiana athletes who will be competing in bowling at National Games—Joey Evans, a 20-year old Special Olympics athlete from Centerville, Ind.; Stacey Gaines, a 44-year-old Special Olympics athlete from Kokomo, Ind.; Iris Lewellen, a 48-year-old female Special Olympics athlete also from Kokomo; and Jerry Moore, a 21-year-old Special Olympics athlete from Cicero, Ind. The four will be coached by Donald Turpin, from Crawfordsville, Ind.
 
“We are very pleased to be able to send such a well-trained and qualified team to represent Indiana at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games,” said Scott Mingle, director of operations for Special Olympics Indiana and Head of Delegation for Team Indiana. “And we great appreciate the support and generosity of fellow Hoosiers, like those from Cassidy Turley, in raising funds and awareness for our competitors.”

SPECIAL OLYMPICS INDIANA HIRES NEW EMPLOYEE
 
Sarah Luken to serve as coordinator of special events
 
INDIANAPOLIS — Special Olympics Indiana recently hired Sarah Luken as its new coordinator of special events. Luken will be primarily be involved with the Indiana Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and related fundraising events.
 
Luken is a 2008 graduate of the University of Indianapolis, where she majored in athletic training. She joins the Special Olympics Indiana staff after being a volunteer for ten years on a local and state level. She currently also works for the University of Indianapolis as a certified athletic trainer for their sports teams, while pursuing her Master’s degree in Business Administration, also at the University of Indianapolis.
 
Luken is an Indianapolis native and graduate of North Central High School.
